28 Days Later

Edward Martin III's picture

I know it's trendy to declare this isn't a zombie movie, but let's quibble about that in another thread.

Danny Boyle's a freakin' genius and "28 Days Later" reinvents a zombie movie without dragging (literally) out the same cliches the others do. The man went back to the basics on his take on zombies, and I have a lot of respect for a good bit of deconstruction.

I'm as fond of Simon Pegg whacking dumb-ass zombies with a cricket bat as the next guy, but 28 Days Later is some scary shit.

Indeed...

Yes we've discussed this in another thread.

This could be viewed as a "Fast Zombie" survival training film and thus could be included under the umbrella of the festival. But technically it is clearly not a Zombie film as they are not dead, re-animated, and in the end starve to death.

I thought of doing a double feature 28 Days/Weeks Later.

Not a zombie film . . .

Mail Order Zombie — Mon, 05/12/2008 - 14:19

I know it's been talked about elsewhere, but consider this: Danny Boyle himself has come out and stated that his "28 Days Later" is NOT a zombie film.

Just wanted to throw that out . . .

"Not a zombie film . . .

"Not a zombie film . . . "

Well, yeah, and The Blair Witch Project isn't a Lovecraft movie. Ahem. ;)

Like I wrote in the beginning of the thread, 28DL throws out the stuff that has already been seen a jillion times.

If one's willing to bend the rules to allow "zombie" to include the dynamics of the zombies in "Dawn of the Dead: We Need More Money" (inspired by 28DL, might I add), the chatty nature of zombies in "Return of the Living Dead" (and practically every short zombie movie I've seen, including movies where zombies "sing" and "dance" and "fall in love with human girls"), and the sleepy people in "The Serpent and the Rainbow," then the objection is less to do with a particularly strict guideline. ;)

At the very least, wouldn't it be fun to show the movie and then have a Point/Counterpoint panel discussing its influence and status as a zombie movie? Light a few fires, that would, yes?

Blech -- 28 Weeks Later kinda

Edward Martin III — Mon, 05/12/2008 - 08:56

Blech -- 28 Weeks Later kinda sucked. If you double-feature those together, 28WL's bad taste will make 28DL's spark sputter and die out.

Surely one can count on the fingers of several severed hands the films that were great and new and interesting and fresh, and yet were followed by horrible sequels that made the whole thing turn into a visual toilet.

28DL/28WL is a perfect example of that.

The characters in 28 Weeks Later make every stupid mistake ever made by every character in every single zombie movie or horror movie ever.

"It just didn't do it for me on any level."

Well, I could watch Carlyle in anything, once I can figure out what he's saying. 8D

"Kinda"?

I actually walked out of 28 Weeks Later in hopes that I could catch Planet Terror in the theater next door. Since it had finished I made myself sit through the rest of the film so I could at least discuss the ending. But yeah, not going to watch that again unless I'm paid well to do so.

I'm not a huge fan of the original either but I've never seen it on a big screen which I'm told really makes a difference. I've also made a promise to give it another chance. However, I think there are stronger films for Zompire.

I hear and obey...

Fair enough. Yes lots of stupidity to get the disease restarted. I think 28 Weeks Later was a very good film. Covers a lot of ground. The main reason it is not on the top of the list is that it isn't undead.
