8 1/2 Short Films About Zombies
The title says it all. This is a collection of comic short films about zombies that entwine to tell a larger story of the Undead’s rise into the world of the living. The shorts include Canadian parody, fifties horror, low-rent gore, animation and a touch of philosophy.
Director Statement
Back in 1998 when the Zombie Collective began making zombie films, the zombie genre was still very fresh and hadn't been explored since the mid eighties. I was attracted to the undead through my teenage love of monster movies and Frankenstein.
The spirit of the zombie film was born out of my desire to experiment with film, both technically and through structure. We started with an outline and a list of shorts that we could link together to tell a simple story of the walking dead on earth. The film was made one short at a time, over time and as we could. These shorts also had to feel different from each other as if made in different eras of time.
And why make just one short film when you can do a whole slew and come out of it with a feature. Well, we didn’t quite get to feature length and there are still stories I’d like to tell (sing and dancing zombies in a grand closing episode).
Time creeps on and it’s been eight years since we started. Isn’t it funny how the cosmic mind has embraced zombies? So much of what we felt was fresh is slowly leaking out onto movies screens. Perhaps this film is overdue.
